How much do you know about your mindset?

It’s not too often I write stuff which is a bit new age and spiritual, but recently I had to go on a seminar for work about becoming great (I know, I am already awesome which beats great right?). There was a section on mind set, and it struck me a little. They presenter used an analogy of something we’ve all done… You know that feeling where you have been driving for 15 minutes, and somehow you have ended up at your destination, but along the way you completely zoned out and have no idea how you managed to get there without causing a pile up? That’s how powerful your mind is, it runs on autopilot more than you know.

You have a conscious mind and a subconscious mind.

Believe it or not, it is said that your conscious mind is only responsible for about 6% of your perception, actions and behaviour. Your conscious mind associates and evaluates data as it enters your mind, allowing only data determined to be of value to be stored. The conscious mind decides upon a course of action or inaction based on this data.

Your subconscious is responsible for the other 94% of your perception and behaviour. It records and stores your “reality” and handles automatic activities and habits. What I mean by this is all the data that you aren’t really aware of, where all your feelings and thoughts come from. Your memory, your personal values, beliefs, and habits are also there. Your thoughts, ideas, outlooks, and how you chose to make some kind of meaning to your experiences in life. These all effect the way you act and what decisions you make.

Habits go on to autopilot. It is automatic, you do not even think about it. Yet just look at how complex this behaviour is. Most of your life is set up like this. Most people have little control of their emotional responses in their lives. The subconscious mind is responsible for organising and making sense of data acquired through perception – notice I said PERCEPTION, not reality. There is a big difference. Our perceptions form our opinions, beliefs, and behaviours. Change our interpretation of our perceptions, and we can rewrite our history, and more importantly, our future!

You tell yourself things like “I can’t”, “It’s just how I am”, “I’ve always been that way” and “there’s no way I can lift that”… Well this is mostly from past conditioning or learned behaviours, and the good news is that those thoughts can be easily overcome, or “Reprogrammed.” When we communicate at a subconscious level, we are then able to give ourselves new commands, which will lead to newer thoughts, feelings, behaviours, thoughts, or attitudes… which will lead to a better, happier future.

Your goals and your dreams start at your conscious level of mind, but often that is also where they end... People attempt to inspire their “will power”, but it is only temporary, you need to change your subconscious and change YOU! A lot of people’s conscious mind wants to make the change and become fitter, healthier and sexier J but it’s the subconscious mind that has been conditioned over time which will make you fail. How often have we tried to start a “diet” and have given in after a few days, a week, or even months? And ended up back where we started?

Wanting to make the change isn’t enough, you need to change your subconscious mind too, and this only comes with time, training and conditioning. Keep good habits, keep reminding yourself why you want to become healthier, fitter etc. Surround yourself with people who have what you want, or who act out what you believe your conscious wants. These will all help that conditioning of your subconscious, and will help you change and reach your goal.

Genuinely believe you can, not just your conscious mind.

Thanks

Brett
