Reduce muscle sorness and maximise the recovery process…

I just want to start by saying we only recommend products we use, and products that we genuinely feel are worthwhile investing in. Part of our ethos has always been to make things as simple and easy as possible, because if not people will give up before they start to evolve, and that includes not recommending anything that has little value for money. However, every now and then you come across something that can be an absolute lifesaver and can have a huge impact on you reaching your goals, your health and your wellbeing.

Who are TDT?

Trans-Dermal Technology was created by Ben Coomber, and by his own admission on his site he is “a true geek at heart for everything nutrition, health and human performance.” He says “This all stems from my personal journey into the fitness industry. I was once 16 stone and obese, and then found a path to skinny but still fat looking, which culminated in finding my ultimate path to athleticism and optimal performance. I find the best coaches and educators have truly been through it all themselves, I certainly have.”

So what is Recovery Spray? According to the TDT website;

“Recovery spray combines 3 research proven recovery agents and delivers them straight to the muscle tissue directly after training. This blend of magnesium, zinc and niacin is suspended in a blend of essential oils and rubbed straight on your muscles post training, combined with vasodilating agents the nutrients are delivered to tired muscles within minutes when it really matters.”

Some bold claims. Ben came across the idea while training to compete in strongman, and playing rugby, and was exploring ways to increase his rate of recovery as he was feeling very beat up from his training. Ben started to delve deeper into micro nutrition and thus stumbled across the theory of transdermal magnesium therapy. Magnesium in the form of salt baths (epsom salts) have been used for some time as a recovery remedy. Ben started using magnesium baths to great effect in aiding recovery. Then after reading an issue of Functional Sports Nutrition magazine discovered the potential for magnesium to be applied locally, again via the skin. Buying some magnesium oil Ben started to experiment post training with applying magnesium directly to the muscles trained in that session. Ben noticed a huge difference in the reduced level of DOMS after training and the feeling of freshness to train the next day without the need for a magnesium bath, which was time consuming.

Ben then started to research what other nutrients intense trainers were commonly depleted in see this theory could be put into a complete recovery product that could be localised in its application. Thus, cutting a long research and development process short, Recovery Spray was born. Key Features;

  • Aid the recovery process

  • Tackle DOMS head on in a localised fashion

  • Could aid sleep due to magnesium’s relaxing effect on the body

  • Contains essential nutrients for the ATP energy cycle

  • Just like oral ZMA, but applied via the skin

So if it’s just magnesium and a few other nutrients, why would I take this over oral ZMA which is usually used?

Being in an oil spray, it came be applied directly to the muscle, which means that it is absorbed trans-dermally straight into the blood stream and muscle involved. It means faster acting and also direct to the source.

How do we know it works?

There is lots of research out there that shows the ingredients Ben has used can have a profound effect on muscle recovery. Magnesium, Zinc, Niacin and other essential oils are all back by research and science. You can view some of the research here on how magnesium can be so effective.

So what are our personal experiences?

Brett bought the product after hearing about it on Ben’s podcasts (which you should all check out too, knowledge bombs everywhere). Much like Ben, he plays a sport and training can often interfere with it. He struggles with DOMS and recovery while also trying to fit in practice and games, and hearing about the potential benefits wanted to give it a go. First time he used it was on a hypertrophy leg session, applying the 5 or 6 sprays per muscle onto the quads and hamstrings. It had a nice, almost menthol smell, and the oil was absorbed easily. Brett did get a slight tingling sensation, not quite an irritation but you could feel it.

That’s it… Until the next day. Historically, the next 48 hours are painful, and even walking can be a bit of an issue. Anyone who trains legs will testify. But he almost had no DOMS at all. Genuinely, almost none. Apart from the glutes. Glutes were throbbing. This is the test, apply it to the muscles you have worked, but leave one out. Immediately you can understand the impact the magnesium has had. Genuinely incredible. I can’t say I was 100% recovered after one day, but the impact the spray had was there to see.

So how much does it cost?

£16.00 for up to 44 applications. Brett has been using it 3 or 4 times a week just for legs, and one bottle has lasted over 4 months so far.

Overall Verdict;

5 star product. Worth its weight in gold for anyone that needs to recover quickly from their training. If you play a sport, or just want to be able to up your training volume and ensure better recovery, then this is a must have.
